What to Expect with a Tooth Extraction

Dental professionals preparing for oral surgery

The idea of getting a tooth extracted may seem pretty scary at first. At Helotes Family Dentistry, we always consider all other options before removing a tooth, like root canal therapy. However, the truth is, in some serious cases, it’s better to remove a tooth, not just for your dental health but also for your overall wellness. It may be a severely infected tooth or a bothersome wisdom tooth. To help dispel some of the fear surrounding tooth extractions, here’s a brief overview of what you can expect with the procedure.

During the Procedure

When you come in for your tooth extraction, we’ll take all the necessary steps to ensure your comfort before beginning the treatment. The main component of that includes numbing the treatment area with local anesthetic. We also offer several levels of sedation if it is needed. This ensures that the most you feel while we’re removing the tooth is some pressure, but not pain. Depending on the position and condition of the tooth being extracted, we’ll then perform either a simple or a surgical extraction. With a simple extraction, we can gently pull the tooth out. With a surgical extraction, we need to access the gums to fully retrieve the tooth. Regardless of which procedure you need, our experienced Helotes, TX dentists will make sure you won’t be in any pain.

After the Procedure

Tooth extractions are a routine procedure in modern dentistry. While it can vary from patient to patient, many single tooth extractions take just 20 minutes or even less! After your procedure, we’ll give you guidance on taking pain medication, brushing, and eating so you can enjoy a quick, stress-free recovery. The amount of time it takes for the treatment site to heal also differs between patients but generally it’s just a couple of weeks.
