Are you missing an arch or an entire set of teeth? If so, then chances are that you have dentures. Dentures are a great way to fill in the gaps in your smile and give you back the full smile you desire. They can benefit people of all ages who are missing teeth. Dentures are a big investment and caring for them is important. The better they’re cared for, the longer they will last!
Clean Your Dentures Regularly
Just like natural teeth, dentures are breeding grounds for bacteria. Soak your dentures every night in a denture solution and gently brush them with a soft-bristled toothbrush. If they aren’t cleaned properly, the bacteria can creep into the gum line and cause gum disease or jawbone degradation.
Handle Your Dentures with Care
Dentures can shatter if they are dropped. Make sure you handle them over soft surfaces, such as a towel placed in the sink or over a bed. When not wearing your dentures, make sure to store them in a moist environment so that they don’t dry out. Dentures can be placed in a glass of water or in a certified denture solution. Speak with Dr. Brigman or Dr. Bejar to be sure that you’re storing them properly based on the type of dentures you have.
Avoid Tearing Open Packages or Eating Tough Foods
While dentures are made to be durable, it’s important to be mindful of how you’re using them. It may be a habit to open packages with your teeth, but it isn’t a habit you should continue with when you have dentures. (It’s actually a bad idea no matter what kind of teeth your have!) Using your dentures as a tool can cause them to break or wear down faster. We also recommend that you refrain from eating hard candies or extremely tough foods with your dentures.
